Frequently asked questions.

What is the West Loop / South Growth Area Study?

This is a long-range planning study focused on the western and southern parts of Springfield. It will evaluate land use, infrastructure, and future growth opportunities to help guide development in a smart, coordinated way.

Who is leading the study?

The study is led by the Springfield-Sangamon County Regional Planning Commission (SSCRPC), with technical and engagement support from CMT and Hanson Professional Services Inc.

Why is this study being done?

Springfield and the surrounding County is growing, and this area has significant potential for future housing, commercial development, and infrastructure investment. The study helps ensure that future growth is planned thoughtfully and benefits the whole community. This planning effort seeks to update two previous studies done in 1999 and 2005, with a refreshed look at growth opportunities that exist today.

How can I get involved?

You can take part by completing a community survey, attending public meetings, and staying updated through this website. Visit the Get Involved page for more details.

Will this plan affect my property?

This is a planning study, not a zoning change, regulatory action, or construction project. It may recommend policies, infrastructure needs, or land use changes over time — but no immediate changes to private property will result from this plan alone.

What is the timeline?

The study kicked off in Spring 2025 and is expected to wrap up by Summer 2026. Public engagement will occur at key milestones, including open houses and the release of a draft plan.

What happens after the study is complete?

The final plan will include recommendations for infrastructure, land use, and policy direction. It may be used by local agencies to guide capital improvements, development approvals, or updates to other planning documents.
